Use Transport Wheelchairs To Be More Mobile

Transport wheelchairs can bring a completely new dimension of mobility to the lives of disabled people, and allow them to experience far more of life than they would otherwise be able to do. The wheelchair has proven to be one of the most enduring and useful of all inventions to help disabled people, and its effectiveness is being constantly improved by advances in technology. Many of these advances are able to give people increased access to buildings and facilities, while others can allow them to travel over far greater distances.

The history of the development of the wheelchair has been a long one, simply because basic chairs have been available since the start of recorded history to transport people with disabilities. In the centuries before the industrialization of the West, there was little need for the extent of mobility which people desire today, and a simple basic well constructed chair was enough to satisfy the user's needs. Now, there is obviously a far greater need for people to be able to move freely from one place to another, and the technology is being developed to make this happen. Buildings and facilities are also being developed to be wheelchair friendly.

The greatest advances in wheelchair design and construction came when it was possible to fit an electric motor to the chair so that the user no longer had to apply their own manual power. This advance was gradual, because the user still had to carry the battery around on the chair. Early batteries were heavy and of low capacity, and needed regular charging. This meant that they had a limited range, and were really only useful for short journeys within the local area. It would be a long time before lithium ion batteries would come on to the scene, and change the game completely.

Handicap Wheelchair

One of the most useful aspects of modern transport wheelchairs is that they are light and highly portable, giving the user a full range of travel options. If you want to travel by car or on an airplane, you can fold the chair and take it down to a portable size. When you arrive at your destination, you can then quickly reassemble the chair and use it as intended. If it is a modern chair with a lithium ion battery, it will give you a considerable range between each charge. If you want to travel by train or bus, you should be able to do so while still in the chair, as facilities in most areas have been greatly improved.

Buying a highly portable wheelchair is relatively easy if you have the budget to buy a top branded model, but it is not disabled easy for those with strict limits on what they can spend. Any major retailer will be able to demonstrate a top model to you, and this is well worth doing if you have access to a retail store. You will be able to try out the chair in advance to make sure that it is a good fit before you buy it. Even if you are not looking for a brand new chair, a retail store can still be worth a visit. Many will have part exchange schemes and will have used models on display.

Finding good transport wheelchairs in the used marketplace is not easy, but it will get progressively less difficult as time goes by because new technology is quickly obsoleting chairs which are still in good condition. The used market will be a good place to look in the coming years, and you will even be able to pick up high quality chairs on the Internet auction sites. Reputable online retailers will be a good source of transport wheelchairs.
