Why Light Weight Wheelchairs Offer Increased Mobility

Light weight wheelchairs are one of the most promising innovations which have hit the market in the past twenty years. The wheelchair has been a wonderful source of relief to people with mobility issues for a great many years, and the introduction of the powered wheelchair has enhanced this greatly. Many people would like to be able to travel further and to make excursions to other areas, and the availability of light chairs which can be folded gives them just that ability.

When you consider the entire history of wheelchairs lightweight models are a relatively recent development. In the past, manufacturers could only use the material which were available to them, and this invariably meant metals which were heavy because they were the only ones which could provide the necessary strength. Now that new alloys have been developed which offer the same strength for a far lighter weight, the possibility is there for chairs to have a whole new dimension of portability. The superior design of joins is also a critical factor in being able to create a chair which will fold into a small area, without the risk of the chair collapsing dangerously during use.

One if the great advantages of lightweight wheelchairs is that they can be used with either manual or electric power. If you want to save money, you an buy a manual chair which will be easier to push than a heavy chair would have been, giving you extended range and a reduced risk of arm cramps and possible muscle strain. A powered chair will be able to take you further and in even greater comfort, but you will need to be prepared to pay around twice as much money for the extra convenience. The combination of light weight and powered mobility in theory gives you unlimited range.

The development of strong but light alloys gives light weight wheelchairs the possibility of being folded and taken on longer journeys. This gives the user the opportunity of making just about any trip they care to, as the chair can be folded and placed into a private vehicle or airplane luggage. When you consider the improvements which have been made to rail and bus services with easier disabled access, there is far greater opportunity for disabled people to travel than their has ever been before. Mobility levels are continuing to increase as battery technology improves.

Buying a light weight chair means buying something which is relatively modern, but it does not have to be brand new. Because the technology used in batteries is being improved so regularly, there are many users who change wheelchairs every time there is a significant improvement. This means that there is always the possibility of picking up a used chair which will still be virtually new in terms of condition and potential use. Not everyone needs the battery capacity to travel for many miles using the chair, and if you can manage with less capacity there are certainly bargains to be had.

You will often find used light weight wheelchairs in retail stores which offer a part exchange system, as they know they can make more money by taking in chairs which are being upgraded, and then selling them on as used. Often, they will have been thoroughly serviced in house before you get to buy them. You can also find many wheelchairs for sale through the online auction sites. You will need to be more careful here, as items are often sold as seen with no guarantee, but if you are prepared to assume a degree of risk you can find many cheap light weight wheelchairs.
